in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

another very fine release in asthmatic kitty s library catalog music series, this album comes from william ryan fritch, a prolific film composer, sound recordist and multi-instrumentalist from oakland, ca. fittingly, music for honey and bile takes on the character of a cinematic score, collecting a number of varied instrumentals that show an incredible range to fritch s diverse talents. in addition to the composition and production, fritch performs virtually everything on the album, playing piano, guitars, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, marimba, vibraphone and dulcimer to name but a relative few. this is seriously impressive stuff, and chamber pieces such as too anxious to dream , shadows like despondent ghosts and tongues that chatter like pigeons sound like the work of a large ensemble rather than just one man. the variety exhibited on the album is breathtaking too, switching between large-scale productions complete with multilayered strings and percussion to more intimate pieces like eggshells and the manipulated piano drone minimalism of chewed their nails to caustic red pads .

michael mayer. credited by many as one of the leading tastemakers in dance music, his dj sets have influenced a generation (or two) of musicians and fans out there today. an artist that has never allowed time or age to slow him down – michael mayer remains tirelessly motivated behind the dj decks, in the studio or behind his desk at kompakt, the company he co-owns and is up next on k7’s long running dj-kicks series.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

2017 repress ,alleviated records is proud to present the ken gill ep. ken was on the scene while bernard (badie) and larry (heard) worked on music ideas between 1993 and 1997 and they both help out on love moon, our first selection.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.
